Washington Information
The District of Columbia, better known as Washington, D.C., is a city within a federal district of the United States, and serves as the nation's capital. Washington, D.C. is located between eastern Maryland and eastern Virginia and covers 68.3 square miles and holds 582,049 people (2005).
Many residents, especially young people, are attracted to and forced to relocate to Washington, D.C. to pursue a career in politics. While these young interns may toil initially with low wages, persistence oftentimes pays off, resulting in a high-paying career in the political realm. The wealth of the politicos contrasts sharply with the majority of the remainder of the District's residents, mainly low income earners.
Located on the southern edge of the East coast metropolitan area, D.C. is a surprisingly quick trip up I-95 to Philadelphia (133 miles) or New York (233 miles). Its central location on the East coast also allows residents easier access than their northern neighbors to such treasures in the Southeast as Miami (1060 miles) and Atlanta (620 miles), as well as close proximity to Baltimore (40 miles) and Atlantic City (72 miles). A quick escape to the hills of Virginia or North Carolina is also an option for D.C. residents. Many, however, would argue there's no good reason to leave the Beltway, the nickname for Interstate 495 that encircles the city and forms an imaginary line demarcating the political arena from the rest of the country.
There are numerous attractions Washington, D.C. has to offer, many of which are world famous. There are memorials (Lincoln, Jefferson, Vietnam Veteran's), monuments (Washington), museums (The Smithsonian Institute and its assorted collection of museums), political buildings (the United States Capitol), and cherry trees blossoming. Of course, that is not everything; let us not forget about that white house where you need more than just good credit to move in.
