Seattle Information
Seattle, Washington, is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest with 573,911 people in 2005. Usually regarded as a newer city, probably either because of its relative proximity to software superpower Microsoft's headquarters or because of the city's iconic and futuristic Space Needle, Seattle's first inhabitants actually date back to the end of the Ice Age 10,000 years ago. Three very different companies and a dead rock star can be at least partially credited with bringing Seattle from the Ice Age to the present.
Microsoft is located in Redmond, on the eastern edge of the Seattle urban area. Omnipresent coffee shop Starbucks has its corporate headquarters in Seattle. Also, Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, has been building air transport devices in Seattle and shipping them to buyers worldwide since its start in 1916. Until 2001, the corporate headquarters was also located in Seattle but was moved to Chicago to separate itself from the manufacturing wing of the company, still located in Seattle.
Grunge music, which completely altered the modern popular music scene in the early 1990's, originated in Seattle. Four influential groups - Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains - all hail from the Seattle area and started their careers playing smaller venues in the area. Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain's apparent suicide in 1994 further cemented Nirvana's, and the grunge movement's, place in music history.
Seattle's official nickname is the "Emerald City," but not because of hidden gemstones or shiny green skyscrapers. Citizens voted on this name in the 1980's in reference to the evergreen trees that dominate the area. These evergreens, along with everything else in Seattle, are covered by clouds 226 days of the year. Thereby, Seattle's reputation as a rainy place comes more from the fact that the possibility of rain exists frequently. This may sound dreary to some, but Seattleites aren't complaining. There is always a coffee shop nearby in which to sit down, sip on a latte, browse the Internet, and rock out to some grunge music while the drops fall.
