San Francisco Information

"The City by the Bay" is just one of the many aliases by which San Francisco is known. Located on a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay on the northern California coast, San Francisco, along with cross-bay partner Oakland and southern neighbor San Jose, is part of a metropolitan area with over 7 million people. The city itself has 739,426 people (2005), and that number has actually decreased in the past few years, as San Francisco had a population of 776,733 in 2000. San Jose, in fact, is larger than San Francisco with 912,332 people (2005).

Of the cities in the western United States, San Francisco has the most storied history, dating back to the days of the gold rush in the 1840's. This is noticeable in the layout of the city. It resembles New York or Boston as opposed to Los Angeles or San Diego by the fact that there are distinct neighborhoods with distinct characteristics. San Francisco's Chinatown even trumps New York's as the largest concentration of people of Chinese descent in one area in the United States.

Another famously unique neighborhood is The Castro, known for its high concentration of homosexuals. Nearly 1 out of every 5 men over the age of 15 in San Francisco is homosexual. San Francisco as a whole is known for its liberal and accepting values. Another neighborhood that gains its reputation from this liberal attitude is Haight-Ashbury, a renowned hippie hotbed since the 1960's.

When people think California they usually think fun in the sun, but if you're talking about San Francisco, you're talking about fun in the fog that can cover the city during the summer and early fall. Still, this doesn't dampen the spirits of San Franciscans, as they tend to make the most out of life. That isn't to say the weather doesn't have some effect on the city's population as San Francisco is the most Internet-savvy (56.1% of adults online) and best-connected city in the country, helped by its proximity to Silicon Valley and its abundance of technology firms.

San Francisco has inspired many songs, countless poems, and gorgeous artwork with its majestic beauty. The sloping hills, historic neighborhoods, and caring attitude attract many visitors, and a good number of those end up making it their home. San Francisco even has a trolley to show you around, so you can avoid traversing all the hills in the area.
