San Diego Information

San Diego, located on the southeastern tip of California, is the second largest city in the state behind Los Angeles and the 8th most populous city in the country with 1,255,540 people in 2005. San Diego enjoys a mild sunny climate throughout the year and residents tend to boast about the perfect weather. Also, its proximity to Los Angeles (2 hours by car) and Las Vegas (5 hours by car) allows San Diegans the opportunity to party like rock stars or gamble to their heart's content without hopping on a plane. Conversely, San Diego's distance from these two hot spots allows its residents the opportunity to easily avoid the temptations, especially considering the beautiful beaches they would be leaving behind.

San Diego was named by Don Sebastian de Viscaino, who founded the city on San Diego Day in 1602, while traveling on a ship whose name was San Diego. Since then, millions have called San Diego home, including a large number of Hispanics (25.4% in 2000). This, no doubt, can be attributed to San Diego's location directly across the Mexican border. Tijuana, Mexico, is just a short trip over the border from San Diego.

The United States military maintains a strong presence in San Diego, including major Navy and Marine Corps bases as well as the famous airfield at Miramar, formerly the home of the TOPGUN flight training program, and setting of the movie "Top Gun".

San Diego is a gorgeous yet often overlooked portion of Southern California, but as Los Angeles continues to crunch people into its limited space, more and more people will discover the gem just down the road.
