New York Information

New York City is the largest city in the United States with a population of 8.1 million people in 2005. "The Big Apple" usually brings to mind the endless rows of skyscrapers that help enable New York City to be the economic center of the most financially influential country in the world, but this only constitutes a relatively small section of Manhattan, one of five boroughs that make up the city. The other boroughs are the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. Each borough contains numerous neighborhoods, many of which are ethnic enclaves dedicated to preserving different cultures. Amazingly, some areas, such as Little Italy or Chinatown, are so insulated from the seemingly infinite reach of American society that they could be mistaken for areas located within the actual country of origin of their inhabitants.

Of course, New York City is also the theater, art, and fashion headquarters of the United States, home to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Modern Museum of Art, Broadway and off-Broadway theater, and also countless museums, art studios, design institutes, and fashion studios of varying size and focus.

New York City, located primarily on islands in the Atlantic Ocean, is the most densely populated city in the United States, with 26,402 people per square mile. This enclosed and crowded area creates an atmosphere that differs greatly from most other major American cities in two highly significant ways. First of all, public transportation dominates, whether it's the subway system or the sea of taxis that manage to move people around the city. Secondly, this lack of space forces residential buildings, like their commercial counterparts, to expand vertically rather than horizontally, creating an inordinate amount of apartment-style living. In New York City, 84% of people live in a multi-unit structure, which means that apartment tenants range from the norm, lower-class families and single young adults, all the way to wealthy families living in huge, house-like condos five stories up.

The quick pace, diverse population and history of trend-setting innovation continue to make New York City the destination for travelers, vacationers, and future residents alike.
