Miami Information
Miami is a city of 386,417 people (2005) whose location on the southeastern tip of Florida makes it a crucial liaison city for the United States internationally, especially in dealing with Latin America.
"The Gateway of the Americas", as Miami is sometimes known, has a relatively small population within its city limits and is only the 45th largest city in the country. However, the South Florida metropolitan area is the largest in the southeastern United States and the sixth largest in the country. Miami is a melting pot of cultures, with the most prevalent immigrant group being the Cubans. Many other cultures, not all of them Latin American, complete the recipe that makes Miami unique.
During Batista's dictatorship in Cuba, some Cubans, many of them wealthy, migrated to Miami, only 90 miles away. In 1959, when Fidel Castro came to power in the Cuban Revolution, most of the Cubans returned home; however, once they found out that Castro was installing a Communist system and restricting individual rights and possessions, Cubans returned to Miami in even greater numbers. Over 400,000 Cubans migrated to the Miami area starting in 1959 until the end of the 1960's. Another exodus of refugees from Cuba, the Mariel Boatlift, occurred in 1980. These refugees were a sharp contrast to the wealthier Cuban refugees of the 1960's; the Mariel Boatlift was more a purge of criminals and vagrants by Castro than an escape from communism. Obviously aided in large part by these massive migrations Miami's population amazingly shifted from around 90% non-Hispanic white in 1960 to around 12% non-Hispanic white in 1990.
Immigrants have various reasons for leaving their homelands, but making Miami the destination of choice is a no-brainer. The area enjoys a tropical climate and has many beautiful beaches, including South Beach, a very popular tourist destination as well as an unending party. The students of the University of Miami, a private institution, and those of other area schools all contribute to the wild atmosphere, as do the many celebrities who spend their free time in Miami.
Both a center for international relations and finance as well as a destination for party-goers from around the globe, Miami is a melting pot in every sense of the word. Thankfully, if the pot gets too hot, the beach is right there waiting to cool things down.
