Denver Information
Denver is the largest city in Colorado with a population of 557,917 (2005). This also makes Denver the largest city in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States, and the city acts as a distribution center for the Mountain States not only economically but also culturally and socially. Denver, located in central Colorado just east of the Rockies, holds the region's major airport and also is the home of the local professional sports teams.
Known as the "Mile High City" due to its elevation (Denver City Hall's 15th step is actually 5,280 feet above sea level), Denver enjoys seasonal weather, sometimes even enduring hot, dry summer days. During the winter, however, Denver welcomes skiers from far and wide and then dispenses them to the many premier skiing destinations throughout the area.
Denver has a strong tradition as a defender of liberal ideology, and as a state Colorado leans in that direction. Denver played a role in the lives of the most influential leaders of the "Beat Generation," as Allen Ginsberg, Neal Cassady, and Jack Kerouac all spent time in the city. Denver demonstrated its liberal attitude on environmental issues when townspeople voted against construction tax hikes to allow for the 1976 Winter Olympic Games due to both environmental concerns as well as monetary reasons. The games were moved to Innsbruck, Austria. In 2005, Denver became the first major American city to decriminalize private marijuana use, further evidence of its position on the left of the political scale.
A trip to the Rocky Mountains will probably lead through Denver, a place where you can enjoy the tranquility of the snow and but also the convenience of the big city.
