Boston Information

Boston, Massachusetts, is one of the most historically rich cities in the United States and easily the largest city in New England with 559,034 people in 2005. Founded in 1630 by Puritans emigrating from Europe, Boston quickly established itself as a major port on the East Coast, due in part to the fact that it was, and still is, the closest American port to the Old Country.

History creates famous sites, and Boston has plenty of them. The Boston Tea Party in Boston Harbor stands as the city's most famous Revolutionary War incident, but Boston was also the setting for Paul Revere's famous ride in 1775. Furthermore, many famous Revolutionary War battles, including the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Battle of Concord, were fought in the Boston area.

Another landmark in Boston is Fenway Park, home of the beloved Red Sox baseball team. The level of dedication (and frustration) of Red Sox fans is renowned, and all of New England celebrated in 2004 when the Red Sox won the World Series over the St. Louis Cardinals for the first time in 86 years after coming back and eliminating the reviled New York Yankees. Boston's alignment with the rest of New England doesn't just exist in sports; the region also shares a dialect, a propensity towards seafood, and a fierce pride in their region and its tradition.

More than 100 colleges and universities call the Boston metropolitan area home, making it at least a temporary home for thousands of out-of-town students. Considering the plethora of riches the area has to offer, it isn't surprising that many end up calling Boston home for longer than anticipated. Except the ones who don't like clam chowder.
