Austin Information

Austin, Texas, "The Live Music Capital of the World", is also the capital of Texas and one of the fastest growing cities in the United States (41 % increase between 1990 and 2000). Buoyed by its large student base (the University of Texas has over 48,000 students and over 20,000 staff members), and burgeoning tech industry, Austin has a population of 690,252 (2005).

The abundance of young people, large technological firms, and live music venues (the annual South By Southwest festival attracts musicians, filmmakers, and fans from around the world) all contribute to the liberal leanings of the city, a stark contrast to the conservative ideology of the surrounding state. Surrounded is the right term in every sense of the word, considering Austin is 271 miles from the next closest state, Louisiana, and every county in Texas north of Austin's Travis County, plus every county in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska except one voted Republican in 2004's presidential election.

A beautiful city located on the Colorado River in the Hill Country of central Texas, Austin is an interesting combination of students, hippies young and old, young urbanites, state politicians, and transplanted small-town Texans. Popular activities in Austin range from attending a rodeo to enjoying a day on Lake LBJ to throwing back a few cold drinks at one of the more than 70 bars and restaurants in the city's famous Sixth Street district.

Austin is quickly becoming a top destination for companies, investors, and individuals alike, all looking to take advantage of the vast opportunity, beautiful scenery, and friendly atmosphere it provides.
