Atlanta Information
Atlanta is the capital of Georgia and the center of activity and commerce for the southeastern United States. In 2005, Atlanta had a population of 470,688, and its recent population boom and subsequent urban sprawl has made the city a focus of urban planning specialists and city development analysts worldwide. Between 1970 and 1999, Atlanta experienced population growth of 123%, as opposed to 66% for the state of Georgia and 33% for the United States.
Atlanta's population is 61.39% African-American, making it one of the country's largest cities with an African-American majority. In addition to its preeminent role as the "Gateway to the South", Atlanta also is a major African-American cultural and economic center. In fact, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., was born in Atlanta and his childhood home is an important Atlanta historical landmark.
Atlanta has a storied history, ranging from being famously burned to the ground by the Union Army's General Sherman in 1864 to controversially hosting the bicentennial Olympic Games in 1996 (Atlanta beat out many cities, among them Athens, birthplace of the Olympics). Atlanta is commonly referred to as "the A-T-L" in reference to its airport code, and the city's international airport is one of the busiest in the world, due in part to the fact that major American airline Delta uses Atlanta as its hub.
Atlanta is still a quickly growing city and the metropolitan area has a total of approximately 5,249,121 people. This number includes many of the newer suburbs created by the astonishing growth and also the many students that choose the area for one of its numerous institutions of higher learning. Emory University and Georgia Tech are just two schools in the city, and the Atlanta area has an abundance African-American colleges and universities.
Atlanta is a southern city with a rich history and strong southern culture, and a dominant force in the fields of commerce, manufacturing, transportation, and communication. The city is proof that these traits are not mutually exclusive of one another, as some may feel.
